From 2025 Dutch suppliers are gradually switching to quarter-hourly prices: instead of one price per hour, a new day-ahead price is set every 15 minutes. This adds flexibility for steering a home battery, heat pump or EV charger on shorter price peaks and troughs.

Is a dynamic energy contract cheaper than a fixed contract?

On average, dynamic contracts are cheaper over time because you don't pay the supplier's risk premium. The trade-off is more variation: in tight markets or with little wind and sun, peaks can be steep. Shifting flexible loads (EV charging, dishwasher, heat pump) to low-price hours gives the biggest benefit.

Do I need a smart meter for a dynamic contract?

Yes, a dynamic contract requires a smart meter (DSMR 4.0 or newer): only that meter records consumption per hour or quarter-hour and reports it to your supplier for billing. If you still have a traditional meter, you can request a free smart meter from your grid operator.

How can I save with dynamic energy prices?

By shifting your dishwasher, washing machine, or car charging to hours with low prices (often at night, during the day with high solar yield, or on weekends with high wind yield), you can save up to 30% on your variable electricity costs.

In the overview, you can choose between 'Market Price' (base price) or a specific energy provider. With the provider option, energy taxes, purchase margins, and VAT are automatically included in the shown price.

Where does the price information come from?

Our data comes directly from the official European energy exchanges. For electricity, we use the day-ahead prices from EPEX SPOT (via ENTSO-E). For gas, we use the TTF (Title Transfer Facility) market values via LEBA.

How is it determined if the price is expensive, cheap, or neutral?

Accepted Answer

A price is cheap (green) when it falls in the lowest 25%, expensive (red) in the highest 25%, and neutral (blue) in between. For gas this is calculated over a 14-day rolling average; for electricity per quarter-hour relative to the current day's prices.

What are negative electricity prices?

Negative prices occur when more electricity is produced than consumed — typically on sunny or windy hours with low demand. Producers pay to offload their power instead of being paid. With a dynamic contract you effectively receive money on your consumption during those hours.

Yes, on the detailed electricity and gas pages you can export the data as a CSV file. To do this, click on the settings icon (gear) at the top right of the chart and choose 'Export Data'.
